Natural Mood Boosters & Anxiety Crushers
* Dark Chocolate – real cacao, not processed cocoa – Natural Mood Booster!
*Tea- studies have shown that L-Theanine, an amino acid found in tea, reduces anxiety symptoms during stressful periods. Matcha has the highest amount (45mg), followed by black tea (25mg) and green tea (10mg). Standard supplemental L-theanine is 100mg (As always, check with medical provider for contraindications if on any prescription medications).
*Bananas - contain dopamine, a natural reward chemical that boosts your mood. They’re also rich in B vitamins, including vitamin B6, which helps to soothe your nervous system, and magnesium, another nutrient associated with positive mood. Just be careful to limit them if you have insulin/leptin resistance.
* Protein - helps to keep your blood sugar levels steady for enhanced energy and mood. Protein such as meat, cheese, beans, fish and eggs also contain mood boosting amino acids tryptophan and tyrosine.
*Turmeric - has neuro-protective properties and may enhance mood and possibly help with depression.
*Berries: The darker, the better: blueberries, blackberries etc. – antioxidants promote dopamine levels, a chemical critical to your mood.
*Omega 3 Fatty Acids - One study in Brain Behavior and Immunity showed a dramatic 20 percent reduction in anxiety among medical students taking omega-3, while past research has shown omega-3 fats work just as well as antidepressants in preventing the signs of depression, but without any of the side effects.
*Herbal Remedies- in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, herbs have been used for many reasons, including for mood and anxiety. Some of the more popular herbs are ashwagnadha, rhodiola and holy basil. Always check with your medical provider before trying herbs and supplements!
